DECLARING YOUR MAJOR: Make an academic plan

Follow these step-by-step instructions to create an academic plan for your Biological Sciences major:

1. Download an academic planner and a degree checklist for the major you wish to declare.
NOTE: the degree checklist is generally organized in the order you should take your courses, use this format as a guideline.
2.

Use the academic planner to plan out your course of study based on the major requirements listed on the degree checklist. To get you started we've provided these sample schedules. If you need help in creating your academic plan, attend one of our degree workshops.

NOTE: It's important to schedule your courses in the quarters they are actually offered. Use the quarter notations on the degree checklist, ie. (FWS), to schedule your courses correctly. You can also check our biology course index and the course catalog to find when courses are being offered.

Some important information to consider when planning your courses:

  • 3 science courses in one quarter is a heavy quarter. Space your general education courses out through your academic career to avoid overloading one quarter.
  • You have university and college requirements that must be satisfied in conjunction with your degree requirements. Check the Navigator for campus requirements and your college office for your college requirements.
  • 15-17 units a quarter is full time; less than 12 units is part time. Your unit-load may affect your finacial aid.
  • To enroll in less than 14 or more than 19 units in a quarter you need approval from your college office.
  • To enroll beyond a total of 180 units or 12 quarters requires an enrollment extension approved by your college.
  • Financial Aid does not usually fund students beyond 15 quarters.
  • Summer Session is a less expensive alternative to registering for an extra quarter. Consider taking summer school courses instead of returning in Fall to finish your degree.
  • Electives are where it's at! Schedule carefully and try to get your introductory courses done early so you can take electives, electives and more electives.
3. After you have planned out your course work, decide how you intend to satisfy your senior exit requirement. If you are intending to use the senior thesis option to satisfy your requirement you should plan on taking BIOL 183L or BIOL 186L, the Undergraduate Research Course, during your junior or senior year. If you are planning on taking the GRE or MCAT, you should plan for a light quarter when you are taking the exam to leave time to study.
If you are not able to make your own academic plan, attend one of our degree workshops.  If you are unable to attend a workshop, come to our drop in advising for help getting started or for a review of your current plan.  Drop in advising is Monday - Friday 1:00-3:00 in Thimann labs room 387.
