GETTING STARTED: Sample schedules for students starting Biology

The following sample schedules are intended to help students beginning in the Biological Sciences. Each sample is tailored to your placement in Math and your high school Chemistry preparation. To determine your placement you must have taken at least the Math Placement Exam.

You can begin your Chemistry course work with either Chem 1P or Chem 1A. The Chemistry department offers an optional self-assessment to help you decide which Chemistry course is best for you. If you're beginning with Math 2 or Math 3, we recommend you wait until Winter quarter to begin Chemistry 1A.

Plan One is for students who place into Math 2 and choose to begin in Chem 1P.
  Fall Winter Spring
  MATH 2 MATH 3 MATH 11A
  Chem 1P CHEM 1A CHEM 1B/M
college core course general education course general education course

Plan Two is for students who place into Math 3 and choose to begin in Chem 1A.
  MATH 3 MATH 11A MATH 11B
general education course CHEM 1A CHEM 1B/M
college core course general education course general education course

Plan Three is for students who place into Math 11A choose to begin in Chem 1P.
  Fall Winter Spring
MATH 11A MATH 11B MATH 22 (not required for all Bio majors)
  CHEM 1P CHEM 1A CHEM 1B/M
college core course general education course general education course

Plan Four is for students who place into Math 11A and choose to begin in Chem 1A.
  Fall Winter Spring
MATH 11A MATH 11B MATH 22 (not required for all Bio majors)
  CHEM 1A CHEM 1B/M CHEM 1C/N
college core course general education course general education course

Plan Five is a more rigorous schedule for students who place into Math 11A and choose to begin in Chem 1A. Please note, students who do not pass there Fall and Winter quarter courses with grades of B or better are not advised to enroll in Chemistry, Calculus, and Biology in the same quarter.
  Fall Winter Spring
MATH 11A MATH 11B MATH 22 (not required for all Bio majors)
  CHEM 1A CHEM 1B/M CHEM 1C/N
college core course general education course BIOL 20A or BIOE 20C

For continuations of all these plans as they relate to your particular major, check out the degree checklists and their associated two-year sample schedules. The best scheduling strategy is to balance your general education courses with your major's introductory requirements. In general, you will want to pair two science/math courses with one non-science course per quarter. It's important to begin your science coursework early to avoid delaying your graduation.
