HEALTH SCIENCES

Professor Grant Hartzog Discusses
UCSC's Health Sciences Program

Today, we face a pressing need for health care professionals in the State of California. UCSC has a long tradition of preparing undergraduates for medical and health careers, and our students have been accepted at the eight California medical schools, as well as at Harvard, Yale, and Johns Hopkins.

We are particularly proud of our new Health Sciences Bachelor of Science degree program - the first of its kind in the UC system. Introduced in 2003, Health Sciences has quickly become one of our most popular majors. Professional schools across the country have enthusiastically endorsed the program for its innovative curriculum. Local physicians and hospital administrators are also major supporters.

Innovations like the Health Sciences program are part of a larger effort to expand biomedical research and training at UCSC. We plan a 25% increase the size of our biomedical research faculty over the next five years and are constructing a new biomedical laboratory building to house them.

Please take time to browse our Health Sciences web site, which includes summaries of program features and requirements, as well as personal testimonies of students, health professionals, and faculty members who have participated.

  PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Health Sciences bachelor of science program provides undergraduates with the foundation necessary to undertake advanced training in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and other biomedically-related fields. The degree satisfies the admission requirements for biology, chemistry, math and physics for most biomedically-related professional and graduate schools in the U.S.

Following the advice of California health care professionals and administrators, we require each student to serve an internship in a local health care facility to gain practical hands-on experience. This has become one of the most popular features of the program. Reflecting California's rapidly changing cultural demographics, students must also demonstrate or gain language proficiency in Spanish to complete the degree.

UCSC health science students also enjoy close interactions with 20 affiliated MCD Biology faculty members. In addition, our Health Sciences Office features an Internship Coordinator and a Campus Career Resource Specialist available to help guide students in identifiying career choices, meeting requirements for and preparing applications to professionals schools. Finally, the UCSC Health Slugs, a student group, meets weekly, providing students with a forum for shared experience and support.
