INDEPENDENT STUDY Biological Sciences offers several independent study courses in which students are mentored by a faculty sponsor but do their research and work independently. All courses require a contract between the faculty sponsor and the student, download the appropriate form and fill it out with your faculty sponsor.
BIOL 99 Tutorial: Seymour Center Internship
This independent study offers students 5 units of lower-division credit for interning at the Seymour Discovery Center down at Long Marine Lab. Students do not receive degree credit for this course, but do accumulate credits towards graduation.
BIOL 191 Teaching College Biology
Students, sponsored by a lecturing faculty member, teach and lead a discussion section for one of our topical courses (BIOL 70, 80A, 80J, 80N, 80P, and 80T). The course awards 5 units of upper-division credit and satisfies an upper-division elective for our general biology majors. Many students interested in teaching after college elect this form of independent study for the teaching and work experience it affords. This course may not be repeated for credit. To apply, contact the instructor of the course you are interested in.
BIOL 195 Thesis Research
Students doing research to produce a thesis can enroll in up to 3 quarters of thesis research. Your thesis is reviewed by your sponsoring faculty member and may qualify for honors. One quarter of your BIOL 195 independent study may also be used to satisfy one upper-division elective for your Biology major pending department approval.
NOTE: MCD majors must enroll in BIOL 186L for thesis research.
